Just before 3p.m. today, my roomie Charla asked if I wanted to head to a video shoot in Park Slope. I said, ‘sure.’ I didn’t really know what to expect, but she said it was for this group out of Brooklyn named Coup d’etat. Charla also told me that the shoot required that we dress in all black. Cool, no problem. But when we got to the location, we realized we got more than what we bargained for.

Charla and I get to the door of the shoot which was Littlefield, we notice that the door is closed, but we see some random guy who walks in, so we follow. Turns out he leads us to the set of the shoot and we see a band, except for it isn’t Coup d’etat, it’s Brooklyn-based Afro-punk band Game Rebellion. I remember stumbling upon these guys back in my myspace days, so it was cool to be “reunited.”

It was little awkward at first when we arrived on set, but the guys made us feel welcome. One of the members even offered me some Jack Daniels and for those who know me, you know I love my jack* Soon after we found out that the directors of the video were to be BB GUN! My new fave directors. I couldn’t believe it. Charla and I had just had the opportunity to meet BB GUN two nights before at a friend’s birthday party. They were mad cool and here we were again, this time on their shoot. To say I was excited was an understatement. Although we were happy to see BB GUN again, we were a little taken aback when we learned that the concept of the video for “Damn Fine” involved paint–not just paint on the band, but on us, too. Aaaah! we weren’t too thrilled about it, me especially. Don’t get me wrong. The paint was water-based so I wasn’t bent out of shape about getting it on my clothes or face, it was my hair. Hey, I’m a black girl with hair that cost a pretty penny, I wasn’t going to risk ruining it for anybody.

As you can see, I gave in. After seeing all the guys in war paint and Charla getting in on the action, I couldn’t just sit out. Truth be told, if it wasn’t for Charla offering up her hoodie to protect my hair, I might’ve missed out on a chance to be in a BB GUN video. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. It was crazy. There was paint flying everywhere from the drummer’s drums to the lead singer, Netic’s mouth. The band and all of us extras looked like we belong to some new-wave tribe. It was so cool, not to mention liberating. All in all, it was an awesome night, full of surprises. Can’t wait to see the finished product*
